Frequently asked questions
What is car insurance?
Car insurance is a contract that pays out if your car is damaged, or if you damage someone else's car, property, or person while driving.
In Qatar, third-party liability is the legally required minimum, regulated under Decree-Law No. 19 of 2007. Comprehensive plans (Motor Perfect, Motor Executive) add cover for your own vehicle, medical expenses, and a range of optional extensions.
Is car insurance mandatory in Qatar?
Yes, third-party liability is a legal requirement under Qatar's Traffic Law (Decree-Law No. 19 of 2007), enforced by the Ministry of Interior. You can't renew your vehicle's registration (Istimara) without valid cover.
Third-party insurance pays for the other party's death, injury, or property damage — nothing toward your own car.
Review your policy documents carefully to know what is covered and not included.
What is the difference between comprehensive and third-party car insurance?
The main difference is what's protected, just others, or you too.
Comprehensive (Motor Perfect or Motor Executive) includes the mandatory third-party liability cover, plus protection for your own vehicle. Depending on your plan, it may include:
- Loss or damage to your own car
- Medical expenses and personal injuries
- Clothing and personal effects
- Agency repairs
- Windscreen or window breakage
- Optional extensions such as GCC cover, off-road cover, or a replacement hire car
Third-party insurance is the legal minimum. It covers:
- Death or injury to a third party and damage to their property
- It does not cover your own vehicle
Cover, limits and optional benefits vary depending on the policy you choose. Please refer to your policy wording for full terms, conditions and exclusions
How is the car insurance cost or premium calculated in Qatar?
Your premium is based on your vehicle, the plan you choose, and your claims record, GIG doesn't publish a flat rate.
Factors include:
- Your vehicle and the plan tier - Motor Perfect, Motor Executive, or Third Party
- Your No Claim Discount, which moves on a scale, it grows each claim-free year and drops if you claim
- Your cover - whether you choose comprehensive or third-party insurance, along with any optional add-ons.
- Your policy excess, the amount you agree to pay per accident
- Optional extensions you add, such as GCC cover or a replacement hire car
Buying online with GIG Gulf insurance gets you up to 10% off.

- Claim settlement and repair updates - You can track your claim status and receive updates until your vehicle is repaired or the claim is settled.
- Book benefit - Book a rental car by phone at least 24 hours ahead, if your policy includes hire car cover. Check your policy for details.
The exact process may vary depending on your policy type and coverage benefits
One step to know: if a third party is at fault, GIG must wait for approval from the third party's insurer before proceeding with your claim.
Submit your claim with GIG Gulf and get support throughout the process.
Does car insurance in Qatar cover damages in other GCC countries?
Yes partly, through GCC Cover, an optional extension that widens your territorial limit beyond Qatar.
It covers you in:
- United Arab Emirates
- Bahrain
- Saudi Arabia
- Kuwait
- Oman
It does not extend your third-party liability cover — that has to be purchased separately at the border of each country you visit.
Always check your policy documents to confirm whether GCC cover is included and any territorial limits or conditions that may apply.

What are the consequences of driving without valid car insurance in Qatar?
Driving without valid third-party insurance is illegal in Qatar under Decree-Law No. 19 of 2007, enforced by the Ministry of Interior. Reported penalties include a fine of QAR 3,000, and your vehicle can be impounded.
Make sure your insurance is active — it's also required to renew your Istimara.
